i am here to urge all of you to keep studying books, do some self education
there is nothing wrong with “knowing how to do something.”
so if you want to study the chinese language and culture, do so
if you want to study japanese language and culture, do so
“drop by drop water becomes the ocean.”
there is going to be a need for people who understand deeply the soul of the japanese and chinese, and their religion, and their language/culture
really it is a step by step process, a little at a time, and why not?
even if you only memorize one character per day, it is possible.
the exponential growth curve is a curve going up to infinity
but if graphed on a logarithmic scale, it is a straight line.
it represents infinite optimism. with the internet, we can become aware of what the world’s problems are
immediately, when they arise, and we can respond through generosity and love to try to correct the course.
that is why i am optimistic. the internet allows us to become aware of what the problems are.
are the problems hunger? homelessness? become aware of where the needs are, then give the resources
even if you only give 10 dollars a week on average, it’s something.
you’re doing some good.
in terms of education, self education, buy the books. keep reading.
i have an interest in zen buddhism. though i am a Christian first and foremost, i also do some study of eastern religions.
zen. tibetan buddhism. mahayana buddhism. the way of the bodhisattva. sometimes hinduism, ganesha, etc.
you really have to give yourself permission
to keep on going
to a better education
if you want to study the plays of ancient greece, go for it. if you want to study the poetry of rumi, go for it.
you cannot have self respect unless you admire yourself. you cannot admire yourself if you are lost in the devil’s business
so…… self respect is not easy. you cannot fool yourself. self respect must be earned through actions that help others.
this world needs more people that can act to bring about peace and understanding between different kinds of people.
buy a complete set of shakespeare’s plays and promise yourself you will read them all. and understand them. and check out or buy books about them.
buy the majority of hitchcock’s films and tell yourself you will watch them all and understand them, read books about them.
i am a different person since i have read watership down, and i deeply admire that book– i am glad i read it, and it is a great book.
the odyssey is a great book to read. a man coming home from war. and what he has to go through to come home. “that wily (resourceful) man, odysseus”
the simple fact is that you get older, and time gets away from you, and you have to use your time to your best advantage.
if you can’t afford to go back to school, at least you can self educate in your own time and in your own way.
i once went to sleep– in my dream i promised myself i would read every book in a large academic library. when i woke up i was happy.
